World Water Day is an initiative by UNO observed on March 22 every year which aims to provide an opportunity to learn more about water-related issues and take necessary action to counter it.

1. This year’s theme ‘Why
Waste Water?’ highlights the importance of improving water quality by
greatly reducing the proportion of untreated wastewater and reusing the
wastewater globally.

2. According to the latest reports by UN, global demand for
water is expected to grow by 50 percent by 2030. The report also underlines that one in four
children will live with water scarcity by 2040.

3. India, one of the fastest growing economies which houses almost
a fifth of the world’s population even today has no access to water in many
rural areas. According to Water Aid Survey report, it is estimated that 63 million people in rural areas has no
access to clean water.

4. Globally, over 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the ecosystem without being treated or reused.

5. 1.8 billion people use a source of drinking water contaminated with faeces, putting them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.
6. Unsafe water, poor sanitation and hygiene cause around 842,000 deaths each year.

7. By 2050, close to 70% of the world’s population will live in cities, compared to 50% today. Currently, most cities in developing countries do not have adequate infrastructure and resources to address wastewater management in an efficient and sustainable way.
8. The opportunities from exploiting wastewater as a resource are enormous. Safely managed wastewater is an affordable and sustainable source of water, energy, nutrients and other recoverable materials.
