4.98 lakh hectares of forest land to be kept aside for the purpose of housing, rehabilitation and other government schemes.
Reducing green cover across Karnataka has already triggered panic and affected the livelihoods of many. Despite the ecological imbalance, the state government has yet again decided to ‘keep out’ a whopping 4.98 lakh hectares from the purview of deemed forests. The state cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for diversion of land from the purview of deemed forests for the purpose of housing, rehabilitation and other government schemes.
According to Law and Parliamentary affairs minister TB Jayachandra, based on the recommendations of the cabinet sub-committee, Karnataka will file a formal affidavit before the CEC-appointed by the Supreme Court over the extent of deemed forests.
Following the Supreme Court order to declare certain water bodies as ‘Sensitive Wetlands’ across the state, the cabinet has decided to appoint a committee at every district headed by the Deputy Commissioners to identify water bodies for declaration as wetlands. The report is expected to be submitted in one month duration.
