Composting Santhe was started as a pilot project in Sanjaya Nagara Ward of Bengaluru. Like minded people welcomed this initiate and gave a good response. The Santhe is being conducted by BBMP with Citizen groups such as SWMRT, Bangalore's Eco Team and B.PAC. Recently, BBMP has tied up with the Agriculture Department to supply compost to them.
This set the ball rolling for the Composting Santhe. Waste Management requires citizen participation along with efficient waste management system. BBMP Mayor and Commissioner realised that the need of the hour was educating the public. The first Santhe in Sanjaynagar gave the public the first glimpse of possible solutions and Bangaloreans were able to appreciate that waste was indeed wealth!
Adding to the Success of Composting Santhe, Composting Santhe was invited and a major event was organised by Government of Karnataka in association with Agriculture Department at Vidhana Soudha. All government officials, including Bengaluru Development Minister K J George, Mayor G Padmavathi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda were present.
Speeking to The Green Mag, Seema Das, volunteer of Composting Santhe said "Santhe that was held on 27th of March at Vidhana Soudha was a special showcase event as part of the flag off ceremony for KCDC’s compost to villages by CM Siddharamaiah. It was an acknowledgement of our collective efforts for over a year to showcase and promote a vision of a Clean Bengaluru. As more stories of changed communities and homes emerge, we are positive that the vision of a Clean Bengaluru will become a reality in the near future! "
The Government has vital role in promoting waste management and Sustainable lifestyle. We are happy to see citizens realising the need of waste management and coming out from their comfort zone to promote it by joining hands with NGOs and citizen-led organisations. If involvement of citizens continue in large scale, then Bengaluru may once again become Green City as opposed to Garbage city now.
